My new year resolution
Posted On 01/04/2009 18:20:30

It took me a while to make a new year resolution because I wasn't sure what I wanted to accomplish and I wanted my list of things to be perfect.  After much consideration, here's my list that I compiled:

1) The first and foremost thing on my to-do new years resolution is to quit smoking, same as almost every year

2) The second on my list is to have more faith and attend church more often

3) Find a job in I.T.

4) Last but not least learn how to read (and write, perhaps?) khmer by the end of the year.

#4 is the goal that i would like to attain the most, after watching people sing Khmer karaoke and reading the text, I'd like to know how to read so I can sing on family get-togethers and at khmer parties.

Great start to a new year...
Posted On 01/01/2009 22:01:58

2009 just started and already it's jam-packed with a lot of excitement.  First and foremost, my third nephew was baptised yesterday on the 1st and took part in his first holy communion.  The second exciting part?  My two cousins, who are brothers, were ordained as priests within the church.  They are the most hard-working and dedicated individuals I know when it comes to Jesus Christ and I couldn't be happier for them to say the least.  It's great the God has bestowed this blessing upon them for the work they've done within the church.  Now, I don't think I'll ever be at that stage.  Although I'm a Christian, I don't believe I have enough time and dedication towards Jesus Christ as these two brothers have.  I would just like to wish them luck into the new year.  Now this means that the two brothers can hold services and also consecrate water into holy water and perform Holy Baptism!  Wow, that's a load of responsibilities, but well deserved.  My brother-in-law is also a priest, and I can never see myself doing what they do.  We'll see where my faith takes me.

Thinking about her this Christmas
Posted On 12/25/2008 20:27:01

We went to the same college together.  Went out with each other for about a year and half, although I don't think we considered ourselves to be boyfriend and girlfriend.  She was one-of-a-kind.  A girl that touched my heart and put a smile on my face like no other before her.  However, I was foolish.  I never told her that I love her.  We could have been.  The many times she was over at my apartment, hanging in the livingroom and balcony I had a chance then and there to tell her that I love her and make something out of our acquaintance.  The many drives we took together, I had a chance.  But I was foolish and didn't act on what was there until it was too late.  Now, this Christmas, I think about her about endlessly and my heart aches.  She's now engaged to someone else and moved far away to Colorado.  My heart aches thinking about the many miles we are apart now.  Deep down inside I pray she will return and we can build something together her.  But, reality is, I don't think I'll ever get that chance again.  There are plenty of fishes in the sea, but none other have I been connect as well as she.  My loss.  Merry Christmas, Emi.  I will love you always.

Book: Learning PHP & MySQL - A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Dynamic, Database-Driven Web Sites

I'm currently reading the book title mentioned above, taking the time to learn PHP and how to use MySQL so I can create my own techie forum.  Don't worry KhmerWitica admins, I won't be competing with you in recruiting members.  The forum will be for all things technology-related, specifically dealing with programming.

Anyhow, reading through the book there's a section with a guide to installing XAMPP (Apache, PHP, MySQL) which is necessary for creating a database driven website.  However, after following the guidelines presented in the books and downloading the files as indicated I ran into a major problem, discovered when I downloaded PHPMyAdmin to administer the MySQL database:

- PHP and MySQL could not communicate to each other

This posed a major problem because the PHP programming language requires a connection to the MySQL database in order to be able read and write to and from the database.

The book indicated where I could download a PHP-MySQL connector, however the web page has disappeared from the site.  In short, I found myself in a pickle.  I turned and searched everywhere on the Internet in search of a connector for the latest version of PHP and MySQL that I had downloaded.  After two days and night of searching, all I could find were older versions of the connector that I needed.  I was about ready to give up on learning how to programming with the language and just call it quits.  I turned off my monitor then went to bed.  15 minutes later I woke up, turned on my computer, searched the file that was needed (php_mysql.dll) and the version number (5.2.8) and came across a site that had a link!  Eureka!  I was saved.  I finally found it.  I was so happy; however, I was stuck with needing an up-to-date libmysql.dll file for the latest version of MySQL.  Then it hit me.  Something in the back of my mind told me that the files CAME with the programs when I downloaded it.  However, since the book told me to download the installers and not the .zip file I had no clue that the files were indeed included with the program.  I re-downloaded the programs once more--this time in zip rather than the installer, and lo and behold libmysql.dll was included in the MySQL zip package, and just as no-so-coincidentally php_mysql.dll was included in the PHP zip download file.

All this time I had searched high and lo for the files and even sent off a couple e-mails to the website that was suppose to have the files.  I even went as far as bothering my brother-in-law while he was at work with the issue, only to find out that it was all under my nose all this time.

Well, searching the Internet I realize that I'm not the only one that has this problem.  So, if any of you are planning on installing and using PHP and MySQL in the present or future, I hope this blog of frustration helps you in solving any problems you may encounter while installing the necessary applications.  If it doesn't, just ask me.  I'm a maverick at this thing by now.

I blame it all on the book.

Now to solve my next batch of problems (for one the Apache server seems to be constantly crashing now -- coincidentally once I had found the solution to my previous problem).

Celebrating my gold stars
Posted On 12/17/2008 10:06:39

I'm behind others such as KSaron and majesticgyrl who have orange stars already, but I wanted to blog in celebration of me receiving all 5 gold stars.  I'm not sure what it was, but it seemed the length of time to get from 4 gold stars to five was incredibly long.  The other stars seemed to come by so quickly.  Oh well, now I celebrate and see how long it takes until I get an orange star.

Studying a broad

It must be a sign from the Heavens

Derek, my new bundle-of-joy nephew, was born today, December 10, 2008, at 11:30AM.  Coincidentally, this is the same time that I was finished with my interview in Burlington, Ontario.  The interview went well, but I won't find out until next week or the new year if I get a position within the company.

The ordeals of back pain
Posted On 12/07/2008 18:05:03

Living with back pain involves a lot of suffering, like I've been doing for the past couple of years now.  I'm not sure what triggered it, but its a bitch to live with.  I've tried chinese therapy on my back where the doctor pokes my back with a needle then drain the blood out, but it didn't seem to work.  Although to be fair, he did say it would require more than more visit, which I haven't come around to doing.  Any advice on what to do about chronic back pain?

6 months
Posted On 12/07/2008 17:39:46

The stat is that graduates usually find employment within 6 months of graduation.  So far its been 5 months for me with no luck.  But then again I had been flip-flopping with my decision to go back to school which caused me not to attend many of my scheduled interviews.  I'll never know, but maybe one of those interview would have been my ticket into the field.  I'll keep job searching, but my 6 month timeframe is coming quickly!  I better find a job soon in the field.  next month there will be a career fair at my college with employers coming in and interviewing prospective employees.  I hope I land something then!
