Mag, you ONLY have 310 friends? Holy moly! I have only around 40. I do a monthly check up on there. If I don't talk to any of those people on my list, i delete them. No need to add people I never talk to. Same with msn. I deleted almost everyone and left only 7 friends. And yes, I do use facebook.

wait, but you're on this site? :P Those features you listed are optional.
[quote="Nirorth"] i dislike facebook. i feel violated being on there, it's too personal. people care too much and take it too seriously. i only have an account b/c most of my college friends either moved out of state/country or are more active on there than myspace (not that i'm active on myspace either). i put very little private info up on both sites and only use it to keep in contact. btw i hate all the stupid features on facebook. wtf is "poking" all about. or sending "gifts," "money," "khmer food," "green patch," or whatever other silly things. unless you send me some real gifts, real money or real khmer food, that's all useless crap to me. i refuse to display myself online or waste my life online.

The applications are all removable actually and you can control your privacy settings to your desire.

MG---just remove the poke function, duh! Come on now, you are Harvard educated, you should know these things.

Haha. I was going to remove it, but then I figured what's the point since I have the Superpoke Application on my facebook template. Huy. And I know for a fact that if my friends can't poke me using the regular poke button, they will obviously resort to poking me using the Superpoke Application. And to be honest, I'd rather get sent pokes, then get sent punches, get a cow thrown at me, get slam-dunked, get bitten or pinched. LOL. Some of my friends are a nuissance. I know they only do that to poke fun at me. It's like if they can't poke fun at me in person, they will do it on facebook by sending me random pokes (here and there) just to annoy me. It's all good.

Are you hooked on facebook and how many friends do you have on facebook? For me, yes, I admit that I am very hooked and addicted to that site. Haha. My friends and I, we all stalk each other everyday on facebook, despite the fact that we see each other at school already. It's all Mark Zuckerberg's fault for inventing that thing. Everyone is super nosey and curious about everyone else's life (myself included). I guess it's only human nature. LOL. Anyway, I only add people that I know in real life and that I go/went to school with. Currently, I have only 310 friends. And of the 310, 38% are from my undergrad school (people I went college with, from my college network), 42% are from my graduate school (people that I currently go to grad school with or who went to grad school with me, all from my grad school network), the other 13% are friends of mine from grade school on up who attend different schools from me (but, whom I've all known since my childhood + high school days), and lastly, about 7% are my students that I T.A. That's about it. I'm in three networks (two of them are my school networks) on facebook : UCSD, Harvard, and Boston, MA. One thing I hate about facebook is that poke thing. I always get like about 8-10 pokes a day from my friends and it's like, okay, am I suppose to poke them back each time or what? I don't always have time to send them a poke back. Or, is it considered rude if you don't poke your friends, if they send you a poke? Haha. I try to send them a poke back when I can because I figured it's a facebook etiquette you know? Kinda like if they write on your wallie, it's only polite to write them back on their wallie, right? But sometimes, I admit that I get freakin' lazy. It gets annoying to get pokes everyday. I wish I can take that poke feature off from my facebook page. Huy.

Hehe. I know it seems like a lot, but it isn't. Like 80% of the people are people that I go to school with.

Actually, some of my professors are on facebook along with 99.9% of my fellow doctoral classmates and not to mention, all my friends at school are on facebook too (so it's kinda hard not to join when everyone you know and go to school with are on there, ya know?), and you wonder where we find time for such things right? Well, there are 24 hours in a day and if we have time to eat, sleep, sing, study, dance and poop, we can def spare 5 minutes a day for facebook. At least, that's how much time on avg I spend there (give or take). I usually only sign on whenever I get a message from my email telling me that a friend sent me something, wrote on my wallie, poke me, invited me to some event, etc. Oh and I also go on frequently to post up class notes for my students and of course, to update my profile with new pictures so that my friends and relatives who are far away can know how I'm doing, what I'm up to, and lastly, what I look like now. That's pretty much it.

Oh I didn't mean to ask you for justifications. It was purely a compliment. The fact that we all know you're one busy person with your Acedemics involvement and to be able to maintain close relationship with friends and relatives...that is awesome! Let me give you a real life example, I know of one person who vanished from the face of the earth when she started her academic year. She would turn down every time a bunch of us friends arranged a get together. The worst part of all she did not even attend one of our friends' dad funeral. So at the end she lost all of her friends. She had her many chances and eveyone basically gave up on her friendship. I think I'm the only friend she has left.
|
Oh, no worries, Raksa. It's cool. I knew it was a compliment and I took it as one too. Thanks for sharing about your friend. For me, no matter how busy I am, I will always make time for my family and good friends. I highly value my relationships with my family and my good friends. The key I believe is keeping everything balanced.
