PHNOM PENH - CAMBODIAN Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday accused neighbouring Thailand of preparing a coup against his government as the war of words between the neighbouring nations worsened.

Mr Hun Sen said he had seen a secret Thai government document outlining the plan to mount a coup, which he said he had passed to Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni to show the 'bad character of our neighbouring leaders'.

'In your secret document it says that although the (Thai) foreign ministry does not agree to stage a coup in Cambodia... others are working on it,' Mr Hun Sen said. 'Don't even think about it. I know who is doing this,' he added, during a speech at a provincial ceremony.

The Cambodian premier said he had also seen documents that showed Thailand has considered waging war against its neighbour. 'You have outlined bad scenarios, including preparing to wage war against Cambodia,' he said.

Mr Hun Sen's comments follow the leaking of a document in Thailand last week, written by the Thai foreign minister to premier Abhisit Vejjajiva, in which the worsening relations between the two countries are analysed.

Relations between the countries, which have fought a string of deadly gunbattles on their border since last year, plunged last month when fugitive former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra became an economic adviser to Cambodia.

What will happen next?  Will there be war between Cambodia and Thailand?  What is the the role of Vietnam in all this?  Your thought.

KSaron,

I hope there will not be any military confrontation but, unfortunately, that cannot be discarded.

You may have read the leaked Thai Foreign Ministry documents.

How to deal with the problem of Thai Cambodian relations: Thailand's MFA secret document

http://ki-media.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-deal-with-problem-of-thai.html

3.3 (Worst case scenario)

If Police Lt Colonel Thaksin and Cambodian PM create any incidents which cause any loss of life and properties, such actions are deemed severe threat to our sovereignty and security of Thailand whether it involves the creation of government in exile which constitutes clearly the interference in the internal affairs of Thailand.
In such case, it is necessary for Thai Government to sever the diplomatic relations as well as use military means to defend itself.

This shows that the military option is on the table, as far as the Thai government is concerned.

“any loss of  (Thai) life and properties” can happen any time inside Cambodia and could have a chain reaction with disastrous consequences for the Cambodian people.

2.3 Government must lead in total unity in order for Cambodian PM to realize that Police Lt Colonel Thaksin has no chance to return to power and his personal relationship with Cambodian PM can not be sustained while at the same time Cambodia will lose tangible benefits with Thailand in the long run whether it is mutual trade, investment or tourist issues.

In fact, Hun Sen does not care whether Thaksin has any chance of returning to power or not and The Thai government itself knows that the “Cambodian PM will benefit from Police Lt Colonel Thaksin regardless of how it ends”.

Unfortunately, most Cambodians don’t know they are being used by Hun Sen and his Vietnamese masters.

Seems like a handy opportunity for hun sen to divert attention away from his own corruption.  I now all countries develope these types of contingency plans for potential outbreaks with other countries.

Seems to me that the Thais have enough problems at home to deal with since they don't have real leadership in place.

I'd say look around at what HS has to hide.

Well, I suspect Cambodia will have to let Vietnam fight Her war, wouldn't she? Why must there be more Khmer blood shed on a land and not to mention natural resources, most notably as of current, the oil wells off the coast, that is no longer Khmer, right? As far as I know Khmer has no military, unless you call men armed in rusty old fire arms running around at the edges of the woods in flip flops one?

In short, it is not a war between Cambodia and Thailand, but notably a war between Vietnam and Thailand, all over Khmer soil and natural resources. Go figures. I am so loving this. Finally! (btw, this is sarcasm at my best here)

RS,

Khmer blood will flow and the hero from the east will come save the day once again.  This is why Hun Sen is so cocky to even pushing the button in hope that Thailand would dance.

This is the game because Khmer people are too "la-nhong" to understand what is happening.  What was our history and what is happening now?  srok Khmer is the still the Killing Field because we allow it to be.

correction: they dont have a US made aircraft carrier, but a spainish made one

but still thailand's navy and airforce is a force to be reckoned with. they have been doing a lot of training with americans eversince 2006 when they bought the f-16s. one f-16 will take out all of cambodia's communication systmes, after that it's all over from there.

according to wiki source

cambodia's airforce has 30 aircrafts of which 9 are combat jets

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Cambodian_Air_Force

thailand has 315 aircraft of which 184 are combat aircraft

Don't forget Alex.....Vietnam defeated the Great US of A.  Thailand is child's play.  If this war break out, Cambodia would be a graveyard again

^ksaron, there's a difference between trying to occupy a nation and trying to win their hearts and minds

versus just BLASTING the shit out of Phnom Penh, in which, thailand could very well do just to send a very clear message. they dont need to even step foot on cambodian soil to demolished a target i.e. Iraq shock and awe.

of course the cost of such action will be heavy for both sides, politically and economically. so i hope no such scenario happens.

Those are (outdated) exported version of the F16; The Chinese are currently working on a system to shoot down the American Stealth Bomber...wonder how many SAM batteries the CPP got from China after the first clash with the Thai in July 09 (hundred if not thousand)…

I suppose he still has his use...but, overall...sometimes u just gotta sit back and enjoy the party as it plays out...even if one raves and rants, seems inevitable anyway...

Cambodia is a play ground, why worry so?

hun sen is the cambodian machiavellian prince. yes he is corrupted but also a "mafioso", a genius in his own right in the line of the many great dictators througout history. only a fool would underestimate this man. he is a major player not only in cambodia but the region itself. the thais would have attacked phnom penh by now if they could but cambodia has alligned herself with the heavy hitters of the communist bloc such as china, north korea, vietnam who constantly looks westward. willingly, cambodia is the most daring gangster. cambodia has been promised her past glory if she plays her role according to the Plan as outlined by the great dragon.

btw sihanouk was promised the same thing and that got how many people killed as part of the experiment. maybe this time they'll come around and actually offer something to cambodia for her hard work... who knows.
