Of course it is okay, with the caveat that you first excuse yourself and that the phone call warrant immediate pickup.


* phone ring *

X: (look at the number and decide) Could you excuse me for a minute?

Y: Sure. (of course he/she can't really say no :))

* X should briefly talk on the phone or promise to call back asap *

i assume "someone's company" to be a date...in which case, out of courtesy, the phone should be switched off only for the duration of the date. if one forgets and it happens to ring, then BawBaw's protocol would suffice. plus, it is terribly rude to be texting while in the presence of "someone else' company". there is no excuse for that.

Only pick up if you are sure that person won't mind-- or if you don't care if they mind.

Also, it depends where you are at. For example, it's a definite no-no while you are in a restaurant, library, movie....

I don't own a mobile phone (ludite). But if my son choses to ignore me over his phone,- I'll kick his ass BIG TIME!
