ANOTHER KNOWLEDGEABLE TRANGEL VILLAGER IS GONE
Posted On 02/06/2010 12:44:07 by GoldenTreasure

A 4:00PM today, my father receives a call from a family friend and former fellow villager of Trangel. I refer to him as lok ta Reth. He lives in New Hampshire.

It is with great sadness that lok oum Chuon Men had passed away. He is mentioned in The Immortal Seeds. He was one of the Khmer elders who taught me Khmer culture, language, history, and tradition. We were working on book projects together. He was the last person who knew the history of Trangel, Kampong Chhnang, and the last well educated in Pali and Sanskrit. My condolences to his family. I will blog a brief history about him and his ties to my family when my head is clearer. Time is against me. Knowledgeable Khmer elders are dropping like flies. I'm loosing valuable information about Khmer history and culture when I am loosing these precious men and women.

Was he a monk? Most people that know pali and sanskrit were on a monk.

Thanks, n1985. All of us will have to share what we have learned from our elders.

Hi GoldenTreasure;

First of all thanks for sharing. It's a shame that a lot of Khmer ancient and modern civilisation goes unrecorded. For the later generation like myself most of khmer historical pasts are imparted via the elderlies encountered, experiences, and words of mouth. I really admire your perverance in maintaining our culture and history.

My condolences, Bong. I'm very sad, too, that we're losing our history bit by little bit. Keep your passion strong, Bong!
