Khmers Get Offended Easily
Posted On 06/30/2009 20:17:34 by troiscouleurs

Yup.

Here goes- now that it is summer break and I aint got lots of reading to do, let me take my time to write about an issue concerning the Khmer community.

As you all know, I want to strive to be like that one Khmer professor from the LBC—the one who comes up with all these theories about the Khmer behavior. Hehe. I won’t be coming up with theories like “Khmers have an illness called thinking too much” nor will I blame gangbanging (the sexual kind) on the Khmer Rouge regime, but I will come up with some reasons we behave the way we do.

Well, have you guys notice how Khmers get offended easily? Yes, us Khmers are worse than a cat jumping into water when it comes to getting offended.  If we could, we would be hissing and clawing, heck, some of us get into hissy-fit mode when someone types something we disagree with.  I ain’t going to lie, but I think I’ve been annoyed with a lot of Khmers, yet I don’t throw temper tantrums. Why do most of us get easily defensive and offended?

I remember when I worked at the Asian Food Store during the summer of my junior year of college.  I literally offended a Cambodian a day. For instance, I look really young, so this lady accused the owner of hiring underage workers.  So I told her, “hey who cares how young I look, at least I’m competent and am able to give you correct change.” The lady was offended and promised the owner to never shop at the store again.  Who cares, I was sick of swiping her EBT card anyway.  Another time this Khmer man asked my co-worker how much the owners paid us.  I told him, that it’s rude of him to ask her that question.  Immediately, he spazzed out and told me that I “don’t know nothing” since I am young.  I told him, “Hey if I didn’t know nothing, then I wouldn’t have one more year left of college.”  He too told the owner that he will never shop at the store again. So "tell me whyyy" we get so offended.

Some reasons of why Khmers get offended easily:

  • Most of us are sleep deprived due to the amount of Thai Lakorn and Korean soaps we watch
  • Dancing the romvong has caused our brains to spin in circles, thus damaging the amygdala and affecting our emotions
  • Most of us are lactose intolerant, so all that vitamin D deficiency = bad!
  • Low self-esteem - God Dammit, no one gives a crap about us besides Angelina
  • Eating all that prohok – we are predisposed to Hypertension
  • Too much XO VSOP whatever the hell Hennessey and ka-ra okay  has fried our brains(thanks nirorth)

Then again, blame it on PTSD.

Hi Spicy- no offense taken. The two examples I gave are not extreme nor did I try to portray these two individuals in a negative light, I was just being frank about them as individuals. hehe. First off the Khmer lady is a BITCH. She is not genuinely concerned for child labor laws, she is the typical khmer lady who goes around and is just a bitch to everyone.  She was lucky i did not tell her off.  I think if I smiled and giggled like a Japanese girl, she would still be the bitch she is. muahaha.

Yes, you guys can say "wow, trois' parents did not teach her manners," the thing is they did teach me manners, I just follow Dear ol'  MLK Jr and "judge people by the content of their character" and yup, I treat those who have bad characters like shit, and I give them the kind of shit they deserve. I'm sure others reading will say, "aww man no one deserves anything..b;ah blah," that is the flaw with folks who try too hard to be PC that they mask themselves etc.

I think your reasoning is flawed. Like KL said, your reasoning sort of confirms that you like it "up the ass."

I also guarantee you that the guy in the situation I wrote about would not walk away.  Maybe I should have set the situation up and noted he that he questioned my co-worker for almost 5 minutes until I finally stepped in.  But seriously, old khmer folks with that stupid mentality need to be told off once in awhile. Yes, I am chaleuy, and I don't mind it. I'm chaleuy when the situation calls for me to be that way.

Spicy, you must be super naive to think that my post was not sarcastic. hehe. Ok, i hope I didn't offend you, but I'm sitting here giggling as I read people with a liberal arts background give me these PC comments, it just shows that people on this site try too hard to be self-righteous. I hope you look forward to next week's blog about Khmers. hehe.

I am not here to prove you wrong, here are some classic examples.

If they ask you how much you earn, and without taking any impulsive aggressive replies, if you just smile, and say it's not important to know, or simply shrug and wait to see the other party reaction, what would happen? I gaurantee that he would just walk out and realised the question was inappropriate. I encounted this situation all the times... especially khmers.

As for the lady, I think she genuinely concerned about the labour exploitation that the owner might taken upon you which she thought you might not know. And of course she would get offended upon your tone.

I always embrace the asian culture of being gentle and less aggressive, having said that you grow up in US, do you really know the asian culture clearly (hope you dont get offended)? Look at Japaneses, they are even more polite never confront anyone or snap back to the older ones....Now, why do they do that??? Tell me!!!

I think it is bias to only say Khmer people gets offended easily, in general I think everyone gets offended easily. The human race, we all have our own opinions and beliefs. Everything about the world is debatable Religion, Sex, Race, Politics etc. but, what I do agree with is what people put into their bodies, all the bad stuff we put into our bodies is bad for us physically and mentally.

I think that taking offense doesn't require one to be submissive or "take it up the ass like a bitch." These things are not opposites; a person can do neither.

For example, my mother is not submissive. She is stubborn and gets her way whenever she wants. However, she rarely, if ever, gets offended. She works with people who are often unreasonable and insulting, and she remains calm while she handles them.

Thus, I can say with certainty that a person can not get offended and not be submissive. It is important to realize that when another person is rude or unkind to you, it's not always because he doesn't like you or because he wants to offend you. Sometimes, it is because he is a jerk, and there's really no reason to get riled up because someone else has a bad attitude.

You are mature beyond your age.  For a 18  years old, you can analyse Khmer society better than PHD professor from where is it Long Beach.  She is twice your age.

It is the oldies mentality of Khmer that are sensity because they are rightous due to age.  Some people have not yet adjust to the idea that how things are in the past is not grandfather in to the current state so they still hold the mentality of back in the days.  Knowledge is power and lack of knowledge is sometime embarrassing.  Khmer need to grow thicker skin.

funny, but true. I think it's a good thing though. I think asians in general are too submissive.
